Imagine you've been invited as the after-dinner speaker at a nearby club or business and they're serving wine with the meal.

In the event, you partake? I'd let you adhere to water or tea or coffee. While you might find one alcoholic beverage or a single glass of wine relaxing and a good way of settling your nerves, then I beg to disagree.

Several years ago, I was invited to speak to a group of female insurance brokers in their monthly meeting. The wine has been served with the meal. I had one glass. Ironically I drink very little alcohol however I couldn't imagine that one glass of wine would hurt.

Hurt it did since I lost my edge. When I rose to speak, I had been too confident and that I experienced no anxiety. Prior to that involvement and in most of the others who have followed, I encounter nervousness. I like nervousness; I want one, as the public speaker, nervous because if you are not nervous, then I am concerned.

You can never be that confident at a live performance - which one glass of wine gave me confidence that I did not deserve and I did not desire. I was not as focused and I lost my passion for my subject because the adrenaline was not rushing to perform its job. While I count on anxiety to provide me a border, to help take my demonstration to a completely new level, the secret in coping with it's learning how to control it. When you are in control of your nervousness, you will learn how to allow it to work for you rather than against you.

Later in my career, I had been invited to talk to the executives at Labatt's Beer in London, Ontario. I had been offered a beer to drink during my presentation. (This was a first!) I declined, however, recall well my experience with the insurance women.

Possessing that advantage in public speaking, experiencing the rush of adrenaline is truly a blessing when confronting an audience. Steer clear of the alcohol to maintain that edge. Trust me, your audience will appreciate your delivery so much more so.
